We did it.
BIG GIANT THANKS to all of you and your belief in me -- we funded THE RED HOOK x DEAN HASPIEL. A paradoxical story I never would've thought of doing until now, due to an ever-shifting paradigm in our storytelling culture and publishing savvy.
I have four more pages to draw and then I will grey tone and letter the bulk of the book, design and print the comic (with the help of my good old pal/cartoonist, Josh Neufeld) and finish other stuff, including sketching a bunch of Red Hook headshots, etc., by early May. Most of y'all should have physical items in your hands come June. I might send links to digital PDFs when I start packaging and mailing items.
Okay, party people. Back to the grind — in large part thanks to your super generosity. I've already written the script for my fourth “deep cut” comic which I'll tell you about in a few months.
Meanwhile, here are a bunch of cool items…
It was an honor to draw a “Golden Age Heroes” cover for The BIG BIG Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #54. Vice-president of Gemstone Publishing, J.C. Vaughn, offered me the gig at last years Baltimore Comicon and wondered which three “Golden Age Heroes” I wanted to draw. I had to think about it and finally arrived at The Human Bomb, Fantomah, and Wonderman. An unexpected team up I would love to write and draw a story for someday. This book will be in shops July 24, 2024.
I also got the chance to draw a variant cover for Geiger #3 (2.0) by Geoff Johns, Gary Frank, Brad Anderson and Rob Leigh, published by Ghost Machine, an imprint of Image Comics, in stores June 12th, 2024. Since Geiger features a nuclear irradiated man, I wanted to pay homage to Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s The Incredible Hulk origin while evoking a 1960’s Doom Patrol comic book. I think I pulled it off. Look at those Go-Go Chex!
In Other News:
My friend/comix writer/renaissance woman, Cecil Castellucci, has launched a very unique Kickstarter project, I am the Comic / Comic Book Walk. I will be a participating artist and you can read more about it here: “To Become Her Own Comic Book, With Artist Tattoos.”
Ken Pierce talked to me about self-publishing comix at MoCCA Arts Fest 2024 via YouTube.

You can find us and a bunch of our comix-making pals at The Brooklyn Independent Comics Show located at 51 35th Street in Industry City, BK/NY, curated and hosted by St. Mark’s Comics.
On a sad note…
I — like the rest of my Gemini CollisionWorks tribe — am deeply saddened by the passing of Rolls Andre. I hadn't seen Rolls in a few years but we kept in touch online. The guy liked his comic books and we connected on that passion.
Rolls portrayed "Nicodemus" with the eloquence and golem-like gravitas of a doubting demi-god in my play, Harakiri Kane. Of which I was so very grateful for. I will miss the magic of Rolls Andre. Rest In Peace, brother.

I’d also like to pour out a little liquor to my late friend/cartoonist, Ed Piskor. There is too much to think about and say. I’ve lost days of work and I’m still processing his tragic death. I may have more to share about Ed in an upcoming newsletter.
Please be kind.
love, Dean
