Mary Fan interviewed me about my Deep Cut comix at New York Comicon 2023 for The Workprint.
"For Haspiel, romance is essential to storytelling. “I don’t know how a good story doesn’t have romance,” he said, while acknowledging that there are examples of works without romance. “Even if it’s just a kiss [or] something like that… Because there’s so much punching and violence and fighting and horror and hate, but how do you balance it? You can balance it with one kiss. Or a hug. You know? I feel like that’s the kind of stuff I want to impart in my work.”

On October 18th, 2014 (nine years ago), I chimed in on social media about the grind:
More than half the time I sit down to make comix, I find it hard to justify my dedication to a difficult career choice. The business of comix can be crippling, a tough racket to crack. I grumble and think about all the things I've missed and the things I'm going to miss just because a story is daring me to make pictures out of words. I knuckle up and fight a storytelling solution that almost has me down for the count, spitting in my eye as I roll in the dirt until I gasp, reach for the stars, and punch its lights out. When the dust settles I stare at something that means something. Only then am I reminded of why I love comix so damned much.
A fan of his comix work since the 1980s, I got to illustrate one of Keith Giffen’s impeccable, fool proof scripts in 2004 on Justice League Adventures #32. I got to meet the famously curmudgeonly legend in 2017 at Wizard World Philadelphia and we got along like two rascals. He was a brilliant storyteller, great collaborator, and broke new ground with his ever evolving art. Thank you for keeping comix fun, Keith. RIP.
See you in the gutters.
