One man's "eruption" is another man's "funky drummer."
I was never a metal head. My first 12-inch record was "Rapper's Delight" by The Sugarhill Gang. While my late brother Michael loved to play air guitar to Mötley Crüe, Van Halen, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi and Metallica, I danced to Donna Summer, Afrika Bambaataa and the Soulsonic Force, The Art Of Noise, Run-DMC and Prince. My brother and I had polar opposite tastes and our shared bedroom was a constant battle between vinyl records. These days, I listen to the likes of Mothermary, Moodymann, John Maus, Boy Harsher, and Ben Webster. But I digress.
Years ago I was at Rubulad, a regular art party in Brooklyn for folks in the know, and was introduced to an amazing rock/funk/blues band called Preachermann and The Revival. The minute they took the stage it felt like I stepped into a funk pulpit in 1971. What could easily have been the opening act to Sly and The Family Stone or Boney M. proselytizing their "atomic soul." It wasn't until they did a cover of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" that I had a full appreciation for the godfathers of heavy metal. It took a man with an Afro and a Roman collar who sounded like a cross between Curtis Mayfield and Al Green to make me finally "get" the kind of music I rejected for so long. And I learned to love Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, and Black Sabbath.
You can actually see/hear a clip of Preachermann and The Revival performing "War Pigs" at the Shrine.
--but for some reason the link turns into a different link once it connects to Facebook and shuts the sound off (probably for legal reasons). However, when you go directly to the Preachermann FB page and click on videos and scroll down and click on "War Pigs" performed live at The Shrine With the stay crunchy shirts," it plays the video WITH sound.
I had a fun time talking comix shop and teaching inking to my old pal, Professor Josh Neufeld’s students at the School of Visual Arts in NYC a few weeks ago. I took a stab at inking Jack Kirby’s pencils of a spooky mash-up of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, a “Super Monster” design I would love to take a crack at writing and drawing someday for DC Comics.
You can see some of my comix on this NY1 Spectrum News report about JewCE, which I will be a guest at November 11th & 12th.
And check out this panel I'm gonna be on @11:30am on Sunday, Nov. 12th:
