I love Red Hook.
In the last decade I’ve dedicated a large chunk of my creativity towards drawing comix and writing plays that inhabit Red Hook. My current shared studio gravitated from Gowanus to Red Hook in the middle of the pandemic. I’ve championed the neighborhood ever since I moved from my native Manhattan to Carroll Gardens in 1997 and made my first bike trek to Sunny's Bar on the waterfront.
Eons ago, I went to SUNY Purchase to study art and film. When I split college to pursue freelance work, I wound up being a Production Assistant on a couple of independent movies ("If Lucy Fell" and "The Ice Storm") and I realized I couldn't hack it as a P.A. I was a director, dammit! But I had no money to produce a movie. And no script worth producing. Ego aside, I kept a toe in film. I provided artwork for "Happiness" and "American Splendor." I was the Assistant Director for "Burnzy's Last Call." I realized it was cheaper to draw my stories with the unlimited budget of a blank piece of paper and abandoned my dreams of making movies. But movies have always been the mistress of my career. So, when I got the chance to make a few short films at The Manhattan Film Institute in the summer of 2022, I had to do it. Big Ups to Shannon Goldman and Tony Spiridakis for their inspiration and support.
I'm excited to take part in The Red Hook Community Cinema this Saturday (which is part of Red Hook Open Studios this weekend). If you're in the ‘hood, please swing by and check out a bunch of short films. Including five that I worked on in various roles; from writer, writer/director, and producer with Whitney Matheson and Shannon Goldman.
