I’m excited to announce that my superhero, The Red Hook, is making a monthly return as a comix strip debuting this month in Brooklyn’s very own the Red Hook Star-Revue (and also in Manhattan’s Village Star-Revue). And we’re raising a toast at Sunny’s Bar on Monday, July 7th from 7-9pm. Please join us and grab a free copy of the paper!
Here is the official press release:
Red Hook Star-Revue Debuts Monthly Comics Strips by Brooklyn Cartoonists
Emmy-winning artist Dean Haspiel curates feature that brings comics back to newsprint
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Red Hook Star-Revue, a free, independent Brooklyn newspaper, has announced a new page featuring the work of some of the borough’s most colorful residents: its cartoonists.
Curated by Brooklyn cartoonist Dean Haspiel, the monthly “Comix Block” features original comics by Haspiel, Nicholas Forker, Ariel Kahtan, Whitney Matheson and Adam Suerte. All five of the artists have studios in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
"Ever since I was a kid reading ‘Hagar The Horrible,’ ‘Spider-Man’ and ‘Calvin & Hobbes’ in the New York Daily News, I've wanted to produce my own comic strip,” said Haspiel. “When I was asked by publisher George Fiala to create a strip for The Red Hook Star-Revue, I couldn't say no.”
Contributors to the Red Hook Star-Revue “Comix Block” include:
Dean Haspiel, who will bring back his popular character The Red Hook. Dean is an Emmy Award-winning cartoonist and playwright whose work has been published by Marvel, DC, Image and others.
Nick Forker, who is the creator of Eyeland comics and co-hosts the “Comics People” podcast.
Ariel Kahtan, an artist and illustrator whose work includes the comic “Bodega Cat” and her new zine, Am I Home Yet?.
Whitney Matheson, whose diary comics focus on her life in Brooklyn. Matheson is a writer whose work includes journalism, fiction, plays and more.
Adam Suerte, a painter, illustrator and artist who is the founder of Urban Folk Art Studios and author of the graphic novel Brooklyn Tattoo.
The paper also boasts comics from Marc Jackson, James Kochalka, Tom Scioli and former Village Voice cartoonist Stan Mack.
"I've been a comic book fan my whole life and I always made sure I had at least a couple of cartoonists in my newspaper, including Marc Jackson who has been contributing from England for years,” said George Fiala, the publication’s founder and editor. “When I went to see him a few months ago at The Brooklyn Comics Independent Showcase in Sunset Park, I was influenced by all the zany stuff I saw at people's tables and the idea of a comics page slowly infiltrated my mind.”
Fiala adds, “When I got to Marc's table I asked him about curating a page, which he went for. Dean Haspiel has a character called The Red Hook and is someone who I always thought should be in the paper. Sure enough he had a table, too, and also said yes to my crazy idea. And now we are going to have a pullout of comics and some other stuff every month. It's pretty exciting for me and hopefully it will be for my readers, both in Red Hook and in lower Manhattan, where I started a sister paper, The Village Star-Revue, last year."
The five Red Hook Star-Revue cartoonists will join Fiala at a free launch event on Monday, July 7 from 7-9 p.m. at Sunny’s Bar in Red Hook (253 Conover St.). All are welcome, and attendees will receive the newspaper’s July issue.
The Red Hook Star-Revue is available at dozens of independent businesses and locations in Red Hook, Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, Windsor Terrace and Park Slope. It is also online at www.star-revue.com.

New Brooklyn bartender Sam Brosia, aka The Red Hook, faces an existential crisis: is he wearing the superhero mask or is the superhero mask wearing him? Who is Unmarked Bill? And how does Dean Haspiel fit into his own award-winning comix series?
