On the latest episode of the VITO x DINO podcast, writer Jonathan Ames joins hosts Dean Haspiel and Vito Delsante to discuss his latest novel, writing advice for the "frightened," collaborating with Haspiel on The Alcoholic, and more.
The extended conversation is rare for Ames (Karma Doll, Bored to Death, The Extra Man), who is not active on social media and does not participate in many interviews.

Hosted by Brooklyn-based cartoonist Dean Haspiel and Pittsburgh-based comic book writer/letterer/editor Vito Delsante, VITO x DINO is a comix-adjacent palaver between two longtime friends and veteran storymakers. Since launching in January, the show has been steadily growing an audience on multiple platforms.
"I'm always stunned that Dean and I can take such small conversations and suddenly see that an hour has passed,” Delsante says. “Having Jonathan Ames, an author I respect greatly, join us for the episode was as easy as it was enjoyable."
“Every time I hop on the phone with Vito, he makes me think – but more importantly, he makes me laugh,” Haspiel says. “Why not share my joy and his pain?” He adds, “Fooling my old pal Jonathan Ames into sparing his precious writing time to yap with us was a coup.”
Ames’s latest novel, Karma Doll, is the third in a series about Los Angeles private investigator Happy Doll. His novels The Extra Man and You Were Never Really Here have been adapted into films, and he's the creator of TV’s Blunt Talk and Bored to Death.
Delsante is best known for his creator-owned superhero story Stray with co-creator Sean Izaakse and is the editor-in-chief of Blind Squirrel Comics, where he is currently writing and editing the miniseries GodQuest: Milestone.
Haspiel, an Emmy Award-winning cartoonist, is best known for creating Billy Dogma and The Red Hook, collaborating with Ames and Harvey Pekar, and illustrating for HBO's Bored to Death. His career includes writing and drawing for Marvel, DC/Vertigo, Archie, Image, and Webtoon.
New installments of VITO x DINO appear weekly. Previous guests include Russ Kazmierczak (Amazing Arizona Comics), Mahdi Khene (Zuperhero Comics) and Mat Major (Full Court Press), with Rob Guillory (Chew) and Ray-Anthony Height (Midnight Tiger) slated to appear in upcoming episodes.
