We did it!
We reached my initial Kickstarter goal. Some of y'all pledged for higher tiers while others spread the gospel. Thank you for your additional support.
I celebrated by hopping on Instagram Live and hosted an impromptu chat with pals/cartoonists, Peter Rostovsky (of Damnation Diaries graphic novel from Uncivilized Books) and Bob Fingerman (who recently completed his Zoop campaign for That's Some Business You're In).

"Lean Into Dean" is an essay I wrote for Heidi MacDonald at The Comics Beat about master cartoonist Will Eisner, indie-comix and crowdfunding.
Excerpt:
"I was starting to carve my own lane when I finally got to draw The Fantastic Four. A dream come true. I was forty-six years old. And that’s when I realized I never dreamed bigger than a work-for-hire paycheck."
You can read all about it HERE.
My friend/writer Warren Ellis wrote a really nice thing about me in his recent newsletter:
"Dean has two main modes: the romantic superhero/action story, and the memoir. He’s as much the child of Harvey Pekar as he is of Jack Kirby. This book seems to be where he finally starts experimenting with fusing those two sides of himself. He’s too smart to go the full meta meta clever clever: Dean’s work is always powerfully human, vulnerable and open."

Cartoonist Richard Fairgray also wrote super kind things about me in his latest update for his comix Kickstarter The Ex-Wives of Frankenstein 1-2:
"If you've ever heard me on an interview that runs more than 15 minutes, I will inevitably start talking about Dean Haspiel's work. The art he did on 'The Alcoholic' is my go to answer when people ask me what I like in comics right now. Dean has a mastery of visual narrative that's rarely seen in comics, effortlessly shifting between genres while weaving in parts from his expansive memotypes for each. Now, after thirty years of doing superheroes and memoir, he's finally merging the two. I cannot tell you how ready I am for this book."
I talked to Geoffrey Grogan about comix and crowdfunding for his Blockhead: Cartoonists Talk Comics podcast. You can listen to it HERE.
Tonight @8pm EST (Monday, March 11th, 2024), I will be talking to John Siuntres of the legendary Word Balloon podcast. Join us and ask us anything on YouTube or Facebook.
Okay Party People. Now for the hard part. Let's see if we can double my campaign as we enter the last two-weeks of this paradoxical project.
Check out THE RED HOOK x DEAN HASPIEL comix Kickstarter.
Thanks & Cheers!
love, Dean
Upped my pledge myself to help out!
Do I still get the $35 rewards, though?
