Oh my god. What great timing reading this post. I’m coming to New York first weekend of May so that I can go and see my syndicate on the Tuesday (seems no one works in offices on Mondays any more). And I have to Airbnb in Brooklyn because I’m a cartoonist and there’s no way I could stay near 57th Street in Manhattan. So I thought about taking the subway and my other half told me that it’s looking really dangerous. I wasn’t sure whether to believe him but I looked into biking and saw that it was nearly the same speed. And I bike every day here in New Zealand. As I did in Melbourne. And I love biking. Plus my feet are messed up so walking is out. Reading your post I’m even happier that I’ve just put my helmet in my backpack. maybe I’ll see you on the road!

I believe biking is the best way to get around NYC. Just travel as if NO ONE CAN SEE YOU. Because, in most scenarios, they can't -- or choose not to.

Take into consideration that most car drivers and pedestrians LOATHE bike riders.

My buddy Larry sometimes rides the subway and then hops on a Citi Bike. Depending on the route.

Just be super careful.

Thank you, that's a good approach. I will be using the Citi Bikes. I've got my backpack down to as low weight as I can as I have to take all my gear to King Features before I probably get the subway from there to JFK to go onto London (I'm going to buy a folding bike on ebay to help me get around in England). Gonna be an adventure!

I grew up biking in the UK and was surprised to find New Zealand to be far more anti-cyclist. It is changing, but it's still really dangerous here, so you have to assume drivers will pass too close and not see you when turning. I often make the most of being a middle aged woman and give an extra wobble if I hear a car come up behind me in the hope they will give me more room because they don't want me to scratch their paintwork.

Happy trails!

If you've never biked in NYC I might just take the subway. It's brutal on the streets (try to use the designated bike lanes)! But see how you feel when you arrive. Don't be a hero.

Exciting that you're visiting King Features. And then London. Sounds like a fun trip!

Dunno what all your plans are for the first weekend in May but we're supposedly having an Open Studio in my work space in Red Hook (Brooklyn, NY) on Sunday, May 5th from 12pm - 6pm. Swing by, if interested. I can send you info.

That would be brilliant. I’d love to come and see your studio. It looks like it’s about a 25 minute bike ride from where I’m staying on the other side of prospect Park. Please send info!
